Comments: This Gate's original name was Xuanwu Men (Black Torto- ise Gate), the traditional name for the northern gate of Imperial Pala- ce. When the Kangxi Emperor (1661-1722), whose birth name was Xu- anye, ascended to the throne, the word Xuan became a sacred taboo. |
